Community Connections is a program of USAID through World Learning and is designed to promote public diplomacy through the exchange of cultural ideas and values between participants, U.S. families and local community host organizations.
Through this program, many entrepreneurs, local government officials, legal professionals, non-governmental organization leaders and other professionals from the former Soviet Union countries can take advantage of practical training opportunities in the United States with local organizations that offer internships for participants based on their interests and experience. Local businesses and public and private organizations volunteer their time and resources to develop and implement programs for Community Connections visitors, and all program participants are recruited through an open competition and selected by local USAID Missions.
The goals of the Community Connections program are to:
- Strengthen the professional capability of civil society, public, and private sector leaders in participant countries;
- To expose participants to the institutions and challenges of a democratic, free market society;
- To inspire participants to implement change in their home countries;
- To build public- private partnerships; and
- To create professional linkages between the American host communities and the participants' home communities
