International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP)

Description

Each year nearly 5,000 exchange participants come to the U.S. on the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). More than 200,000 International Visitors have engaged with Americans through the IVLP, including more than 500 current or former Chiefs of State or Heads of Government.

Launched in 1940, the IVLP helps strengthen U.S. engagement with countries around the world and cultivate lasting relationships by connecting current and emerging foreign leaders with their American counterparts through short-term visits to the United States. The majority of IVLP exchanges include visits to four U.S. communities over three weeks, although projects vary based on themes, Embassy requests and other factors. Participants meet with professional counterparts, visit U.S. public and private sector organizations related to the project theme and participate in cultural and social activities.

There is no application for IVLP. Participants are nominated and selected annually by the staff at U.S. Embassies around the world. For those who live in the United States, there are many opportunities to get involved at the community level. Visit the Global Ties U.S. website for a list of community organizations in 45 states and information about local activities.

The University of North Carolina School of Media and Journalism is proud to partner with International Focus to support the IVLP program. Over the years that the school has hosted IVLP participants, we have had the honor to meet journalists, entrepreneurs, policy makers, NGO representatives and politicians from around the world. Our faculty have relished the chance to talk with these people; our students have learnt enormously from meeting them. Our school teaches better ways to communicate with the world. Welcoming the IVLP participants to the school gives us a window into different countries, different cultures and different ways to communicate. It is stimulating and inspiring to share ideas about the role of journalism in society, the way that social media has changed society, or the way that advertising can reflect and impact a culture. Many IVLP participants have continued to talk with faculty and students after their visit to UNC, ensuring that their time in Chapel Hill has lasting impact for all parties. We are honored to be a partner in the IVLP initiative and look forward to welcoming more visitors from around the world in the years to come.
